Few artists in hip-hop have afforded the longevity that Sadat X and El Da Sensei have. Unmoved by an inevitable changing of the guard in Hip Hop, X and El remain beacons of true, un- facsimiled artistry. They have shared stages, crossed paths both domestically and internationally over the last 25 years.
Sadat X, of the group Brand Nubian from New Rochelle NY, (Grand Puba, Sadat X, Lord Jamar, DJ Alamo) has achieved longevity, notoriety, and critical acclaim that he has earned over the course of his three-decade, 15+ album career. Hip-hop heavyweights such as Jay Z, Notorious B.I.G., Nas, Common, MC Lyte, Miguel Migs and even the alt-folk troubadour Jack Johnson, have called upon “Dot X” percussive flow and lyrical dexterity to bolster their already iconic outputs. And whether it’s The Neptunes, DJ Premier or Madlib, any producer worth their salt has built their beats upon Sadat X’s trademark talent.
El Da Sensei, of the group Artifacts from Newark NJ, (El Da Sensei, Tame One, DJ Kaos) developed a
fan base of hardcore hip-hoppers and sparked a new sub-culture called “backpackers”. Best known
for their albums “Between a Rock and a Hard Place”, released October 1994 and “That’s Them”,
released April 1997; both albums charted singles on Billboard 200 and R & B/Hip Hop. Shortly after,
they decided on an amicable break up. El went on his own traveling the world and dropping singles
and solo albums featuring underground heavyweights such as Pharoah Monch, Prince Po, J-Live,
Treach of Naughty by Nature, Sean Price, Rah Digga and more.
Between continuing active music careers, X & El joint effort “X L”, displays a unique fusion of X’s “Wild Cowboy” style with a blend of El’s “Crowd Pleasa” flow – raw lyrics over crafty, artist catered beats. Digital, physical, vinyl and cassette was released in October 2018.
